THE VANISHING

Ring scene

The sprawling unfamiliar desolation juxtaposed with bustling crowds of strangers. The scene right before she disappears, when they kiss with the car frame dividing them. an incredibly shot movie in the way it conveys the escalating panic in the first half, leaving you little clues, but also misdirecting you with possibilities and familiar sights. The last 20 minutes are probably my favorite, you think you know where it's going but you have no clue. One of my favorite shots from the film is here, Rex looking into the killers car in the rain after he drinks the coffee. the wipers are off and the rain slowly blurs out his face, as it would have looked from a distance maybe, in the background of a photograph. he knows he is going to die - he sees the two golden eggs in space, the two coins buried together at the base of the tree where Saskia went missing. you know he's going to die, but I gasped when it cut to the killer filling in the hole with dirt, immediately knowing what it meant, connecting it back to their conversation in the car, to the conversation with the cop moments before. just a masterfully done film.

learning what kind of person you are, and being that person no matter the cost.
